11/12/2022 0 Comments Enchanted portals which![]() Fri 3rd Apr Although you are completely right to some extent, I do think that for many of us, it was more like some other people already noted that even though Cuphead's developers did not invent the aesthetics, they were the first to use them in a game, and they used it so well.It lost it's identity because of it and will always be compared to Cuphead.īut, as I said at the beginning, I will play it and hopefully enjoy it. Unfortunately, Enchanted Portals, as good as it looks (and hopefully plays) is copying a lot from Cuphead in both visuals and gameplay. While it is true there are plenty Metroidvanias out there and nobody seems to complain it copies original Metroid, a good portion of them give a unique spin to the formula. It has more than a passing resemblance to the Cuphead. So when something similar comes out, absolutely it will be compared to the original.īut the problem here is not really the art style but the gameplay. True, Cuphead doesn't own the style of 30's cartoons, but, if I'm not mistaken, it is the first one to utilize such style in a video game, at least to that degree. On the other hand I totally get the people that are saying this is a rip-off of Cuphead. On one hand I love to see more games like Cuphead and I am definitely getting Enchanted Portals once it gets released. To that end, we have created a new extended trailer in which we show some of the changes and new additions we’ve made to the game and a lot of you have been suggesting: Now, Xixo Game Studio is resurrecting the crowdfunding drive, claiming that it will allow them more control over the project – and has released a new extended trailer to support this.Īfter several months of hard work and exploring different options to fund the development of Enchanted Portals, we have ultimately decided to relaunch the Kickstarter campaign as we believe it would grant us more control over the project. It quickly faced accusations of plagiarising the look of Cuphead, and the crowdfunding campaign was cancelled not long afterwards – although the developer insisted that this was down to interest from a publisher, negating the need for the Kickstarter. The game was first announced in October of last year, with a Switch release on the cards even at that early stage. Original Story : Enchanted Portals – the 2D platformer that caught heat for looking a lot like Cuphead – is heading back to Kickstarter, developer Xixo Game Studio has announced. But it has to be said, if it’s the only thing you are going to offer, you have to go all out.Update: The Kickstarter is now live, with a €120,000 / £104,659 goal. We get that platformers aren’t usually a vehicle for gripping stories, aside from more Recent titles like Ratchet and Clank: A Rift Apart for example. The story is that you have been sucked into an enchanted world and you will need to fight your way through the beasts and baddies of this land to get back. The only unique thing about this game is the storyline but sadly, the story is bare bones. Enchanted Portals fails to understand this nuance and while the game plays fine and is fun, it feel dirty in some strange way. It’s similar but not to the point of copying. Just look at Fenyx Immortals and Breath of the Wild. However, there is a correct way to include mechanics from other IP’s and this isn’t it. For that reason, the combat and platforming feel clean and crisp. Then as for gameplay, Enchanted Portals has just copied Cuphead’s homework again. Plus, the magical focus of the storyline gives this visual showcase a little bit of a unique feel, but not much as far as Cuphead is concerned. It offers the same 50’s style, lower FPS animation along with vibrant cartoonish assets which bring the settings and the stages to life. However, if we are looking through an objective lens, we have to say that this game looks the part. It’s hard to give this game as much praise as it deserves as it has taken so much inspiration from Cuphead that it reads as a pure copycat operation. Ok, so let’s talk about the visuals first of all. ![]()
